Admissions Policy

It is the policy of the school that members of the minority ethnic groups, children of either sex and the disabled should be given equal consideration for admission to the school.

All pupils are admitted to full time education.

Admission Dates

The school currently has two admission dates that are as follows:

• Pupils whose fifth birthday occurs between 1 September and 30 April will be admitted in September to full time education

• Pupils whose fifth birthday occurs between 1 May and 31 August will be admitted in January to full time education.

Standard Number to Admit

This number is set in conjunction with the LEA and is set at 50. The school is therefore only able to admit pupils up to this number in each year group.

Early Years Admission

Spring-born children admitted autumn term full time.

Summer-born children admitted spring term full time.

Admissions Policy

There is no guarantee of a place for children living in the priority admissions area.

In the event of oversubscription places will be allocated using the following criteria in the order given:

1. Children Looked After;

2. children living in the priority admissions area with a sibling attending the school;

3. other children living in the priority admissions area;

4. children living outside the priority admissions area with a sibling attending the school;

5. remaining applications.

In the event of oversubscription within any of the above criteria, priority will be determined by straight line distance from home to school, those living closest being given the highest priority.

Exceptional medical circumstances (supported by medical evidence) may override the above.

Programme of induction for reception pupils

1. Play group and nursery liaison

1.1 Positive liaison between the school and the local play groups and nurseries is encouraged. Contact is made with the play groups and nurseries by the Headteacher and the reception class teacher/s.

1.2 Visits to the play groups and nurseries offer pre-school children the opportunity to meet school staff in an environment in which they feel comfortable.

1.3 During the visits staff convey information about school events, such as lower school concerts, bazaars etc. in order to provide interested parents and their children with opportunities to visit the school on an informal basis.

2 Visiting the school

2.1 Parents are invited to an informal evening meeting which takes place in June for pupils starting school in September or in November for pupils starting school in January. (See Appendix 1). At this meeting the details of the admissions procedures, the school’s early years policy and the way in which the school day is structured will be explained. Parents have the opportunity to ask questions at this meeting.

• Pupils then have three one hour visits to the school on their own.

(In cases of particular difficulty additional arrangements can be made)

3 Starting school

3.1 During the first week of term parents will receive information sheets giving advice as to how they may help their children at home, particularly with regard to reading, handwriting and spelling. (see Appendix 2)
3.2 Within the child’s first month at school all parents of new children will be asked to an individual meeting with the reception teacher/s in order to discuss the baseline profile and also how the home/school partnership can benefit the child’s learning.

4 Induction Package

4.1 Parents of pre-school children will receive an induction package prior to their child starting school. This will be given to parents at the evening meeting or sent by post if they are unable to attend the meeting. The induction package will include:

• A covering letter to include current school meal prices and when to pay, the labelling of children’s clothes, etc (see appendix 3)
• School prospectus
• Parent questionnaire (see appendix 4)
• Child’s own booklet
• Admission form (see appendix 5)
• Parent teacher association information
• LEA booklet, “Primary Education in Essex”
• Health care letter
• School meals pack

5 Other opportunities to visit the school

5.1 Each year the school has a variety of events to which parents and pre-school children are invited. These include:

• “work exhibition” evening
• summer fete
• Christmas bazaar
• KS 1 Christmas concert

The following lists a few of the school routines you may need to know:

1 If you wish your child to have school lunches, the current price is £1.30 and this should be placed in a sealed envelope (The school office supply small envelopes suitable for dinner money) and marked with child’s name, class and the amount enclosed. Please ask your child to give the money to their class teacher who will in turn give it to the school office. Money should either be paid weekly on Monday morning or on the day the dinner is required.

2 Your child is allowed to bring tuck for playtime. Snacks can be bought in school for 10p or 20p (correct money only please). They may also bring a toy to play with at playtime.

3 Reception children require a plastic cup (to be left at school) for drinks throughout the day. The cup will be labelled with the child’s name.

4. We encourage the wearing of school uniform as listed in the School Prospectus. Please make sure that all your child’s clothing is marked with his/her name to avoid unnecessary loss.

5. Children will have three PE sessions a week (days indicated by the class teacher). They will need a T-shirt and shorts or a leotard, a pair of plimsolls and a PE bag with draw string. Please make sure that items of clothing for PE are marked as for uniform.

Yours sincerely
